Community: God’s Plan for Building Unity

August 7, 2010

In some ways, following Jesus and playing soccer have a lot in common.  For example, there are aspects of the Christian life that develop as we  train and grow as individuals.  But the whole point really of soccer is not individual achievement but supporting a common goal–pun intended:)–through teamwork.

As in soccer, churches only become successful when members are effective in receiving their individual gifts and talents and sharing them with the rest of the team.  In fact, according to our scripture passage for this weekend, walking the path to Christian maturity is not a solo process, but rather a group activity that is resourced by the entire church body working together in love.

Join us this week as we answer these questions and more:

1)  What prevents a church body–and its individual members–from growing into God’s best in the area of love and unity?

2) As individuals, what are we allowing to hold us back from receiving all the gifts that God has for us?

3) What are the impacts when we resist God’s gifts for us?  Isn’t that a personal decision that impacts me only?

Come and join us on Sunday at 5 PM as we CONNECT in shared space at 5413 Blue Ridge Cutoff, and bring a message called “Community: God’s Plan for Building Unity”.

Feel free to take a “sneak peek” at the Scripture passage for the week.

Community: God’s Plan for Facing Tough Times

July 11, 2010

If there is one thing that can be surprising about this Christian life, it is the reality of the message that Jesus speaks and Paul repeats that “we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God”.  (Acts 14:22)

Whether the challenges of being a Christian include brutal religious persecution, as the entire early church (including Paul) experienced, or whether those hardships are less violent, there is one thing for sure.  The closer we are following Jesus, the clearer we find our way challenging.

As we cry out to God, oftentimes we find help coming from an unlikely source: the community right around us.  And really the whole point is this– now is the time to invest in those relationships.

Many of us are going through some pretty tough things now.  Its a good time to strengthen the connections between us.  To reach out a hand and grow in our love and trust.
